Makeba Gibbs, Esq. is the founder of the Law Office of Makeba Gibbs, a general practice firm in La Plata, Maryland. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Michigan University and a J.D. from Widener University School of Law. Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, she grew up understanding the importance of education. She has been licensed to practice in Maryland for over 16 years.

 

Attorney Gibbs began her legal career as a law clerk in the D.C. Superior Court’s Abuse and Neglect Division before accepting a position at the Maryland Office of the Public Defender in 2005. As an Assistant Public Defender, Ms. Gibbs was a highly regarded defense attorney and quickly gained a reputation for being an assertive and compassionate advocate for client rights. She has handled numerous major felonies including murder, carjacking, armed robbery, assault and drug cases. In her law practice, Ms. Gibbs additionally handles civil and family law matters, peace and protective orders, as well as, special education law cases.

Makeba Gibbs Serves Her Community:

Attorney Gibbs is active in several different bar associations and volunteers her time to both legal and community civic organizations throughout Charles County. She is a past-president and an active member of the Charles County Bar Association, where she has also served as entertainment chair, treasurer, secretary and vice-president.

 

Sits on the Board of Directors for Point of Change Jail and Street Ministry.

 

Licensed Foster Parent for six years, has fostered six infants, ages 2-weeks to 9 months old. Adoptive parent to one son.

 

Mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Chesapeake.

 

Founding president and charter member of the Salome A. Howard Bar Association, Inc. She was a Maryland State Bar Association Leadership Academy Fellow.

 

Active in The American Inn of Court for Southern Maryland.

 

Volunteer for the Family Law Clinic, sponsored by the Charles County Bar Association, which provides consultation on a variety of legal matters pro-bono to the community. Attorney Gibbs continues to be a dedicated public servant.
